SBR
Styrene butadiene rubber, the highest-volume synthetic rubber in production. Wet grip, tear strength and a forgiving processing window, supplied oil-extended and non-extended.
The grade number tells you most of what you need
SBR is a copolymer of styrene and butadiene, usually produced by emulsion polymerisation. The bound styrene content sets the balance: more styrene raises stiffness, wet grip and tear strength, while less styrene keeps the compound soft and flexible at low temperature.
The standard numbering is informative once you know it. Grades in the 1500 series are non-extended cold emulsion rubbers. The 1700 series are oil-extended, which lowers cost and improves processing at the price of some mechanical performance.
- Oil-extended 1700-series grades for tyre tread compounding.
- Non-extended 1500-series grades for technical goods.
- Mooney viscosity confirmed on the certificate of analysis.
SBR grades we supply
The three grades that cover the majority of commercial demand. Other emulsion and solution SBR grades can be sourced against a confirmed order.
- SBR 1712
- SBR 1502
- SBR 1500
What decides the SBR grade
Start with whether the compound needs oil extension. After that, Mooney viscosity and bound styrene do the rest of the work.
- Oil extension: 1700-series grades carry extender oil, 1500-series do not.
- Mooney viscosity: governs how the compound mixes, mills and extrudes.
- Bound styrene content: higher styrene means more stiffness and wet grip.
- Stabiliser type: staining or non-staining, depending on the finished product colour.
- Bale presentation and packaging: confirm against your mixing line handling.
Typical SBR applications
Tyre manufacturing absorbs most SBR output, but technical rubber goods and footwear are significant markets in their own right.
- Passenger tyre tread compounds
- Conveyor belting and industrial hose
- Footwear soles and sheeting
- Moulded technical rubber goods
- Seals, gaskets and profiles
- Roll covering and lining
- Adhesives and sealants
- Floor tiles and matting
