Linear low density polyethylene, the grade that lets converters run film thinner without giving up puncture or tear strength. The core resin behind modern stretch wrap.
Strength at gauge, not strength at thickness
LLDPE is a copolymer: ethylene with a short-chain comonomer, usually butene, hexene or octene. The chain stays essentially linear with short uniform branches, and that structure is what delivers tear strength, puncture resistance and elongation well beyond what LDPE can reach at the same density.
For a converter this translates directly into cost. A film that holds its performance at a lower gauge uses less resin per pallet wrapped, which is why LLDPE has steadily displaced LDPE in stretch and heavy-duty applications.

What decides the LLDPE grade
Comonomer type is the property most often overlooked, and the one that most affects how the finished film performs.
- Comonomer: butene for general film, hexene or octene where toughness is critical.
- Melt index: lower for heavy-duty and stretch, higher for injection and rotomoulding.
- Dart impact and tear strength: the real measure of downgauging potential.
- Cling additive: present or absent depending on whether the film must hold a load.
- Processing aid: needed at low gauge to avoid melt fracture on the die.
